There are many people who believe that leaders are born. They believe that there is something inherent in a person that affords them a natural ability to influence and lead people. I will agree that there are some people who are born with God given talents that allow them to have greater opportunities to influence people. I would also argue that we are all born with the abilities to lead.
There are three major opportunities to become a leader:
Opportunity #1, Natural Born Talent:
We are born with talents. Some are fortunate enough to discover those talents and maximize them throughout the course of our lives. When it comes to leadership, there are some people who just lead from the beginning of lie. We see children playing on the playground, one tends to have an influence over the others. He/she wants to play a certain game, and they tend to get there way in getting everyone to play the same game. They are not aware of their influence on others, they just act on instinct in communicating what they want and other children follow.
Many people do not start life off in this manner. Many children were once bullied, or shy, or uncertain about themselves and started off as the follower on the playgrounds of life. The good news is that the those who are not born leaders did not miss the leadership train. It is still waiting for you.
Opportunity #2, Environment & Education:
There are those, that maybe not born with the talent to lead, were brought up by nurturing parents and excellent teachers and mentors. They were conditioned by people and their environment to lead. They were taught strong morals and values, along with the important characteristics leaders possess. Leadership was demonstrated to them by the examples set by the influential people in their lives. They benefited from seeing it done right, and learning from their mistakes in a safe environment. Athletics are common gardens where leaders at this stage are cultivated.
There are still those who did not have the fortune of nurturing parents, nor excellent teachers or mentors. Their environment was unsafe and of a negative, or neutral influence on their lives. Yet, the train has not left the station. There is still time to learn how to effectively lead people.
Opportunity #3, Awareness:
The beauty of the human mind is that it is capable of shaping the physical world into whatever we want it to be. We can change our thoughts that restrict our reality, and our beliefs that act as barriers to our dreams by raising our awareness. Everything that is impossible to one person is possible to another. It's not because one person is smarter, or has more money, but because the person who believes it to be possible, never thought or believed otherwise, therefore that person, if committed enough will make the impossible, possible. If you believe that it is impossible to be a leader, then you are right. But, if you believe, though you never led anyone before in your life, that you can become an effective leader, you are also right.
It sounds easy, right? Just change how you think and what you believe and you can accomplish anything. It's not as easy as it sounds. The key is in our awareness. Many of us, include your truly, are not completely aware of our limiting beliefs. You see, we are in the picture, not looking at it. If you have the capabilities to step outside yourself and look within to identify what holds you back, you are very lucky. For those who are not so lucky, it is always best to seek out a coach or mentor. Someone who is devoted to helping you succeed.
Everyone has a leader within themselves. Whether it was born in them, cultivated in youth, or built through a heightened awareness, it is there. The train is still waiting for you, if you have not stepped on it yet. If you want to lead people and grow professionally, and personally, all the answers are within you. The opportunity exists today.
Leadership is a choice, not an instinct, or intellect.
