Those who grow and succeed in growing their business, or achieve success professionally and personally, tend to envision themselves in a future-state. They are able to see and manifest their future as if it was happening right now. They act and live, NOW, as though they are who they want to become. The desire to achieve their vision is so great, nothing will stop them from achieving it. Study any successful mind, inventor, innovator, and you will find they most likely saw themselves, in detail, in their mind's-eye, living their vision before actually making it happen.
Those who struggle to succeed tend to think that circumstances must become right for them to succeed. That before they can allow themselves to see their own success, they must actually succeed first. This is thinking in reverse.
Thinking in reverse can be said about developing your own leadership capabilities. Far too many people feel they have to wait to have followers before learning to lead. Even organizations do not train people to lead until they promote someone to a leadership position. This philosophy increases the likelihood of failure in leadership. Micro-management is born out of this way of thinking. People who have not learned how to lead, have never been trained nor studied leadership will resort back to what got them promoted, which was individual performance, not leadership. They will become micro-managers, trying to dictate to their people to become clones of themselves, instead of influencing them. Their future vision of themselves leading people was never cultivated. They saw money, they saw power, and they saw prestige that came with each promotion. This way of thinking will place a ceiling on your potential, and your growth, both individually and organizationally.
Hold yourself to a Leadership Standard NOW:
You do not have to have people reporting to you, or wanting your services, to think of yourself as a leader. Do not read about leadership and say to yourself: "I will do all of these things when I have people to follow me." Start taking action on those teachings now. Become a leader in your everyday life. Demonstrate leadership in society, and in your work-place. Be that leader today, not tomorrow. Envision everyone, not matter where you are, where you go, is looking to you to be an example to follow. It could be at the gym, at work, in the store. You are an example to follow. To be a person who is a leader, or an organization that leads its industry, you must lead at all times, not just when you are in front of people or ahead of your competition. If you wait, your opportunities may pass you by.
Ask yourself: "Would I want to follow someone who needs to be promoted to a leadership position, or needs to have people to lead, before they learn to lead? Then why should I make anyone follow me when I have not learned how to lead?
